Regimental flags, commonly known as "the colors" provided as a visual means of communication during the confusion of the battle. The flag bearer usually led the troops into battle, giving men a marker to follow & a way for lost soldiers to find their regiment. The color bearer was an easy target for the enemy, though capturing the flag was considered a major achievement for the opposing side. The colors often told the story of the battles the regiment had fought.
