Fugitive Slave Law of 1850- act passed by Congress in 1850 which forced the return of escaped slaves to the South if found in the North. A slave hunter only had to confirm to judge that the person was a runaway. Anyone who did not arrest a runaway or who did not return the slave back to South, could be fined $1000!. Those who helped a runaway could be arrested, jailed or fined.
