Lincoln abolished slavery with the push for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution. The Senate passed the amendment in April of 1864 before the House in Jan. 1865--- all the votes were secured before Lincoln's death, leaving a lasting legacy of his Presidency. The states had to ratify the amendment and that process was completed by the end of Dec. 1865.
