Key Facts to Know: - By 1962, around 7% of African American population was registered to vote - African Americans were intentionally excluded from the Democratic Party in the state of Mississippi so the movement was to create another alternate political party that new registered voters could belong to and vote in the upcoming elections. - over 700 college students helped with this movement- attended training, traveled to Mississippi- set up & worked in Freedom schools, organize and help to register voters. - Around 30 schools were created but were "underfunded" - 3 workers disappeared-considered "missing" and bodies were later found - Robert Moses & Fannie Lou Hamer & several others- helped to organize Mississippi Freedom Summer - Impact of event: 1965 Voting Rights Act
